Background: The son of an Electrician and a primary school teacher, Richard Fraser was born in a suburb of Edinburgh. He had an older brother, David and has a twin sister, Lauren. He considers Lauren to be his ‘little sister’ because he is older than her by 5 minutes. Richard’s father had an interest in gadgets and had turned his garden shed into an electronics workshop. Richard had picked up on his father’s hobby and spent many hours working with him in their workshop. At school, Richard found he excelled at electronics design due to his shared hobby with his father. He also found he had a natural flair for languages, easily picked up French and German and taking extra classes in Spanish outside school time. He also represented his school at cross-country running on a number of occasions. Richard’s teachers all told him he had a promising future as an electrical engineer and with his language skills could easily work for one of the big European companies, but Richard had had only one career in mind since he was young. He wanted to join the police. At first Richard’s parents where opposed to his choice of career but they reluctantly agreed when they realised that he wouldn’t be happy doing anything else. When he left school and started his police training, Lauren left home for teacher training as she had decided to follow in their mother’s footsteps. Richard was in his last month of training when his father told him that David had been shot and killed. The police believed that it was a drug-related killing as David had been associated with some unsavoury characters. They had arrested someone for the murder but had to release him due to lack of evidence. A couple of weeks after the funeral, Richard started his probationary placement in Edinburgh. The death of David hit his family hard. Two months after the murder, Richard’s mother had a nervous breakdown. Her body was found slumped against David’s headstone, she had taken her own life. This devastated Richard’s father and he died a few weeks later. The doctors told him ‘He had given up the will to live.’ This further tragedy deepened the already strong bond between Richard and his twin sister. At their fathers wake, Richard made a solemn vow to his sister on the memory of their parents and brother that he would do everything in his power to see the people responsible for all their grief, whoever they where, brought to justice. This promise was not made lightly. His determination was soon noticed and after only 18 months in uniform he was transferred to CID. He had soon realised that most of the drug money was connected to organised crime. This did not deter him. It didn’t matter how important his latest arrest was in the big picture, Richard always wanted the one further up the chain. He saw the number of families like his that had been touched and destroyed by organised crime. This strengthened his determination to keep his promise. After five very successful years with CID, Richard was approached by Scotland Yard to join the newly formed taskforce National Criminal Intelligence Service (NCIS). This unit had been set up specifically to tackle nationwide crime and to liase with other world-wide police organisations (ie FBI, Interpol) in global operations. It was here that Richard found his talent for electronics and his flair for languages came in very handy on surveillance operations. Over the next few years Richards career soared. He was promoted and participated in a number of successful global arrests. Over the course of several investigations, Richard began to suspect the existence of a large powerful organisation that was, directly or indirectly, responsible for most world-wide organised crime. He even suspected that organised crime was just a small part of their agenda. His suspicions were confirmed when, on a surveillance mission, he overheard a careless Web agent. The agent had also hinted at another organisation, Orion. Believing Orion to be another crime related organisation, Richard began asking questions. This quickly brought him to the attention of Orion who blocked him at every turn. This didn’t even slow Richard down, he just asked more questions. When Orion realised he wouldn’t be deterred, they looked very closely into his background and service record. They decided he would make an ideal Orion agent but that it would be best if he was unaware that he worked for them. Therefore, Orion arranged it so that Richard’s immediate superior was replaced by an Orion agent who ensures that Richard’s talents were aimed against Web rather than Orion. Due to his dedication to his job, Richard has never married. He has kept in close contact with his sister and spends as much time with her as his assignments allow.
